One of my earlier series, most pieces being made from 2005 through 2009, was inspired by my love for the west. At that time one of the techniques I used was to make a piece at a small size, between four and ten inches, in art – collage from my palettes (see The Lakota Spirits), painting, etc. I then would take that image to a photo lab, and have them make a large black and white print to my specifications, and I would start over again turning that print into the colors of my original with dyes and paints. This was a time consuming process, but it was an interesting discipline and I also felt it had a unique graphic quality, and also utilized some of the techniques from my days as a photo retoucher. Another technique was to create an original piece using the collage technique with painting and other mixed media, having the piece stand as is.
